The responsibilities of a deacon are not clearly listed or outlined in scripture. Traditionally, the role of a deacon has been associated with Acts 6—providing help with administration and mercy ministry. However, there are many different types of helpers/ministers who are appointed for various tasks in the New Testament. Therefore, we can assume that the work of a deacon is associated with anything that assists the church in ministry that isn’t reserved for the office of elder. Deacons will be under the authority of the elders and will be commissioned by the elders to help them carry out the responsibilities of church leadership. The specific responsibilities will be defined for each person based on their area of service within the church.
